How to make an indoor-air complaint easier to investigate

A room feels unpleasant, an odor comes and goes, or someone notices symptoms at home. It is understandable to suspect mold, especially after a leak, but that suspicion is not yet a complete explanation. A useful investigation starts by recording the complaint and the building conditions separately, then examining the evidence that connects them.

Separate the complaint from the suspected source

Describe what you notice without turning it into a diagnosis. “Musty odor in the bedroom after the cooling system starts” is a useful observation. “Toxic mold throughout the house” is a conclusion that the observation alone does not support. Indoor-air concerns can involve several possible contributors.
