Indoor air quality & mold concerns

Indoor air concerns can have more than one cause. A musty odor should lead to a building investigation, not an automatic sale of an air purifier or sampling package.

Describe the pattern

Record which rooms are affected, when the odor is strongest and whether it changes with HVAC use. Ventilation, moisture, stored materials and other sources may all deserve attention. Explain recent painting, cleaning or remodeling so the assessor has context.

Match the next step to the finding

Ask how the proposed investigation will distinguish possible causes. Filtration can be one part of a broader plan, but it does not repair a leak or remove damaged building materials. Discuss health concerns with a qualified health professional rather than relying on a building test to diagnose symptoms.

Choose a question a building assessment can answer

Useful questions include whether an odor follows equipment operation, whether an area has a history of wet material, and whether there is a plausible concealed moisture source. A general air-quality score may not resolve those questions. Ask what the proposed service can and cannot establish.

Before purchasing equipment

Describe any purifier, dehumidifier or ventilation changes already tried. Ask why additional equipment is being recommended and how its effect would be evaluated. A purchase should fit the identified issue and maintenance needs rather than replace a plan to investigate the building.

Your practical checklist
  • Keep a room-and-time log
  • Share recent building changes
  • Ask what the investigation can establish
