Mold around windows: condensation or a leak?

Moisture around a window can come from indoor air meeting a cold surface, rain entering the opening, or water arriving from another part of the wall. The dark marks alone cannot distinguish those causes. Map when the area becomes wet and which surfaces are affected before choosing between a small cleanup, a humidity adjustment, and a building-envelope repair.

Map where and when moisture appears

Name the window and photograph it from across the room. Then document the glass, frame, sill, trim, and nearby wall separately. This makes it possible to compare the concern with another window or revisit it after repair. A tight photograph of a corner may show discoloration but hide the feature that explains the water path.
